Tips on how technical SEO can help you with your digital branding strategy.

Our last few episodes of The Coffee Cup have dealt with digital branding strategy.  When people think of branding they think uber creative.  Logos, images, campaigns, messages, feelings- all of the trademarks of an artist/designer.  But in the digital world, you can’t leave out tech.  Search Engine Watch gave a great list of tips that can help you use SEO to further your branding efforts, and I used that as my muse for today’s Coffee Cup.  Here’s what we learned:

  1.  Take advantage of sitelinks
    When someone finds your site in Google Search, a card pops up with your domain and then up to 6 sitelinks that connect the visitor to key pages on your site.  You need to review these links to make sure that visitors are being directed to the important pages that you want them to see. If the links are to outdated pages, landing pages that you don’t feature prominently, or if the pages you think are important aren’t being seen, you can demote the links that are popping up to allow better links to populate!
  2. Use your alt tags to brand
    Alt tags are pieces of code that you use to label the images on your site.  You want to make sure to mention your brand’s name on all of the logos you use so that when someone does a Google image search, your pictures are the ones that come up.
  3. Know what comes up AFTER your name
    Type in your name and then let the rest of Google auto-populate.  That next phrase will tell you alot about how your brand pops up.  It might say your name and your product or the market you’re in.  It might say your name and then something negative from a review.  Based on the terms that auto-populate, you can determine some SEO content strategy to capitalize on that intel!
  4. Use Markup schema to brand your logo
    Scheme markup is a piece of code that is used to auto-populate images and content in certain places at Google’s discretion.  If you have schema markup on your logo, Google might be able to incorporate your logo in strategic places to make sure that your brand is recognizable.
