Digital Marketing Became More Virtual in 2018

From Chatbots to A/R- digital marketing was left in the hands of the bots!

Google started 2018 off with an eerie bang, releasing voice technology that could make hair appointments and reservations at Chinese restaurants, all without the person on the other end know they were talking with a computer. by December Duplex, that voice system rolled out in May, was already being used in test markets all over the country to book reservations.  Things move fast in the tech world, and they just seem to move faster and faster with each passing year.

Chatbots truly became a part of standard vernacular in 2018.  Virtual assistants became a part of nearly every home in America and our reality was augmented in just about every way imaginable.  Digital marketing didn’t necessarily have huge, game-changing developments in 2018, but the things that changed were fun and really cool!

    • Augmented Reality Marketing is now a legitimate niche
From our own Cleveland Cavaliers partnering with Bud Light to create an A/R experience for in game fun, to Target allowing customers to try furniture in their home without bringing it home from the store, 2018 saw companies take A/R Marketing to new heights. It even became a major part of marketing during the World Series! It’s not just about being cool or hip- it’s about developing useful tools that consumers want to use to make live easier as well.  Healing pain points- that’s what sales is all about.

    • Brands are using more and more user-generated content
One of the things that brands have realized is that social media’s most powerful influencers is the everyday people who use the products being sold. You no longer have to pay for expensive spokespeople to push your brand.  For example, when McDonald’s Australia was looking for kids in high school to work for them, they created a Snap filter enabling kids to make a video wearing the virtual McDonald’s uniform. The recruiting was being done for the restaurant by the same kids that wanted jobs.  More than ever, the user is the star of the ad campaign.

    • Voice Search continued its charge on SERP results
2 out of every 5 adults use at least one voice search per day (SEOEXP).  By 2020 that number is expected to hit 50%.  We knew it was coming, but experts didn’t realize how much of an impact voice would have until Christmas of 2017 when the true boom of the virtual assistant set in.  It’s only going to grow- so it’s time to optimize for it!
