The Coffee Cup 10/29/18: Consumers Acknowledge Artificial Intelligence

2 MIN READ

Every week, EConsultancy, a British marketing site, publishes a list of stats about digital marketing that they found interesting.  It is always insightful, and last week was no exception.  Among the stories told through stats:

  • 66% of consumers would ignore all future marketing efforts from a brand who just sent them “hit-or-miss” offers. 82% of respondents said that they are aware that brands are using artificial intelligence to market to them, and 47% said they were fine with that if it meant they were getting better offers.  So even in the midst of all of the info security and data breach scandals we see popping up all over the world, it seems as though consumers are okay with companies knowing some info about them if it means less intrusive, “spammy” offers.
  • 26% of all senior marketing professionals say that their company lacks a digital marketing strategy. Woah. That’s scary.  On top of that only 39% of those executives felt that their marketing strategy aligns with company goals.  Sounds like someone has some explaining to do, and there is probably a lot of finger pointing going on in those offices.
  • Due to the rise of social media as a viable shopping platform. Black Friday and Cyber Monday purchases on social media are expected to increase by about 66% vs. 2015 numbers.  What a difference 3 years makes. The study showed that nearly half of all UK consumers are purchasing through social media (a number very close to the amount of American consumers purchasing online), and Facebook leads the way as the most popular social media platform for direct purchase.  But watch out Mark Z., Instagram is gaining on you, with consumers stating that the better preview functionality of the ‘Gram makes it an attractive outlet.
