Steps to Take a New Approach to Your Marketing

Are you ready to say goodbye to 2020? This year has been challenging for many businesses across nearly every industry. While your business may have struggled with marketing in the last year, it is still essential to take the time to assess your digital efforts before beginning to plan for the new year. You will likely find some trends and takeaways that could inform your 2021 strategy and improve your company’s online performance in the new year.

Step 1: Evaluate Your Performance in 2020

Maybe you followed a structured digital marketing plan in the last year, or maybe your efforts were more staggered and reactive. Whatever the case, we recommend taking the time to review all of your marketing efforts in the last year and their results. You can start with a short list of questions:

  • What worked?
  • What did not work?
  • Did you achieve the desired results you’d hoped for in 2020?
  • Did you stay within your marketing budget?
  • Has your target market or geographic focus changed in the last year?
  • Where did you focus the majority of your digital efforts and advertising spend in the last year?
  • What areas do you want to invest more in for in the coming year?

Step 2: Go Back to the Basics

If you are frustrated with or disappointed in your 2020 marketing efforts, we suggest going back to the basics. Who is buying your products and services, and why?

Don’t forget who is at the core of all of your marketing efforts: your customers. If your marketing in the past year did not work, you are likely not reaching the right people with the right message at the right time. For example, perhaps you invested hundreds of dollars in paid Facebook ads but saw very few conversions. Were your paid ads highly targeted to the right audience? Did they contain compelling graphics and messaging? Or, is it possible that your customers are not spending time on Facebook? Maybe reallocating that budget to Google Ads would be more effective. Thinking through these types of questions is essential during your planning. If something didn’t work, take a step back and consider why.
